Installation view #1, San Jose Yacht Club
mixed media, 2009
San Jose Yacht Club, an exhibition and residency by Christopher Reynolds, marks the artist’s first solo exhibition in San Jose. San Jose Yacht Club is inspired by acts of camaraderie, tradition, and the ritualistic actions involved in obtaining a right of entry and/or membership into traditionally exclusive societies.
During a 4-week residency at Space 47, Reynolds created an installation of paintings, sculpture, and photographs that introduces a social environment not unlike an exclusive brotherhood by employing acts of initiation, role-playing, and mergers. The resulting work entertains a fictional world of hybrids inspired by time-honored traditions that investigate rank, identity, and fantasy, while questioning the collective impact and relevance of elite social practices. Welcome to the San Jose Yacht Club.
